Lord Muruga , The Tamil God

Unlike the other great religions of the world,no one knows when Hinduism was formed or who was the founder. Hinduism could not be destroyed as no invader, foreigner or any practising Hindu could explore Hinduism in depth. Mankind has sustained the belief in Hinduism for millenniums.

Hinduism is pervasive, inclusive and it penetrates into depths. It is merely a way of life and culture. The concept of god in Hinduism, is to know , to understand and to appreciate it. One has to turn to the appellation by which it designates itself. Hinduism has it own sovereignty. Hinduism cannot be seperated nor split from the duties of livelihood.

Adoration and faith in gods and goddesses has been a practical necessity in the lives of Hindus. Depending upon the needs and tastes of votaries, they pray to Lord Siva, Lord Thirumal, Sakthi, Vinayagar, and Murugan. However the Almighty is one.

Murugan is one of the deities gripping the fervor of Tamils in the Hindu faith. Wherever there is mankind Lord Murugan shows his grace on them. Lord Murugan lives in the hearts of his devotees. Lord Murugan is recognized as the god of youth and beauty. Murugan, the god of the `kurinchr (hilly) region, has his abodes on hills. His prominent shrines are the `Aaru Padai Veedhu'.

Lord Murugan lives in the hearts of his devotees. Ancient tamil people built temples for Lord Murugan in the caves, by the river banks, on the hills and in the beautiful woods. Lord Murugan is also known as Subramanian, 'Su' means happiness. The vedas symbolized him as 'joy and light' with fragnance. The word Murugan conveys the meaning youthful, charming sweet holiness.
Lord Murugan is known as `Cevvel from the worshipping of the red spear. `Kantu' means middle, `kantan' in the middle of his parent Sivan and Sakthi. Skanda' is also meant shoulder as he is bold and strong. Saravanabba va' relates he was born in a thicket of reeds.
`Arumugam' describes six noble qualities of Lord Muruga which are beauty, fame, bravery, good health, wealth and knowledge. The devotees of Lord Murugan know that 'velan' is Lord Muruga who holds the 'vet' that brings victory. The first name of Murugan 'Palm which means he is a mendicant.

The divine powers of Lord Murugan and his personality potraye him as a 'Velaikkaran' among his devotees. The purana says Muruga is the son of five elements air, water, fire, earth and sky who was bor from the eyes of Lord Siva.Lord Murugan is also glorified as guru of Tamil Language.
Devotees and pilgrims visit the ‘Aaru Padai Veedu’ (six shrines) of Lord Murugan because he is the primordial god of Tamils. Lord Murugan fulfills the worshippers’ prayers and quests.

Temples for Lord Murugan has been built all over the world. Murugan deity with a vel has a temple in Batu Caves. Every year Thaipusam is grandly celebrated in Batu Caves .

Devotees and worshippers come in millions from far and wide to join in the celebrations at Batu Caves,

K-ala Lumpur is a town situated in a place where the Gombak and Kiang rivers merge. Kuala Lumpur was surrounded by tin mines, rubber estates and coffee plantations.
The South Indians played an important role by cutting the thick jungle and developing the country.

Slowly Kuala Lumpur developed as to a trading centre. At that time Mr.Kayaroganan Pillai .was the head of South Indian labours. Oneday he had a dream , goddess Amman told him to build a temple for her son ‘kandan’ in the Batu Caves.

In 1873, with the help of Mr.Kayarogan Sri Maha Mariamman Temple was erected in Kuala Lumpur. In 1888 Thambusamy Pillai and Mr.Kandappa Thevar consecrated a ‘vel’ in Batu Caves and started praying there.

Mr.Thambusamy Pillay was, one of the founder of Kuala Lumpur City. He was born in 1850 and studied at Raffles School in Singapore. At seventeen he started work as a writer at a lawyer's office. His hardworking nature and knowledge made him shine in his job.

He worked as a treasury officer for thirteen years. Later he brought workerts from India to work in the tin mines. We are proud to say that the earlier Selangor state administrative offices were constructed by Mr.Thambusamy Pillay and his family (present Court and magistrates court building)

He was the pioneer who build the present Kuala Lumpur Maha Mariamman Temple and Batu Caves Subramaniam Temple.Thambusamy Pillay deceased at the age of 53. This important manforgotten from the history of Kuala Lumpur. His historical and memories are exhibited in the national museum of Malaysia.

This became a big issue among the Hindus. This case is filed and won. After many obstacles, Thaipusam celebrations continued every year from all over the world, thousands of devotees and visitors gather to fulfill their vows and to offer prayers to Lord Murugan.

They can purchase clothings, decorative items, sweets and flower from these stalls. Only vegeterian food is allowed to be sold in the restaurants.
